GOLF SWING MECHANICS OF BALANCE
The golf swing mechanics of balance is something many amateurs never realize. Many bad shots are a result of poor balance rather then swing flaws. Next time on the range pay attention to what happens in the feet rather than the upper body. Golfers tend to pay more attention to the back swing , turn, downswing, and follow through thinking this is where their swing flaws lie, when in many cases it's simply the balance during the swing causing them.
First we need to understand what balance in the golf swing is. Many think that when they finish their swing and they are stabilized, they stayed balanced. They are right, but the critical balance happens during the golf swing. This is the balance that will cause swing flaws. For discussion purposes this is what I am referring to from here out.
How do you find out if you have a problem? Lets simply state everone can benifit by improving balance.
Next time you hit a bad shot pay attention to where your weight is in your feet and do the same when you hit a good shot. Notice the difference in your balance. If you really want to get a good feel for this you need to exaggerate what is happening during the swing. Get on a balance board and hit some shots, this will allow you to feel how good or bad your balance is, and forces you to stay centered during the shot.

If you use a balance board hit 15 to 20 shots standing on the board, pay attention to how this feels. Then get off and hit shots reproducing the same feeling you had on the board. keep repeating this process untill it becomes natural. Once balance is realized repeat this practice every couple of weeks to keep balance in check.
Without the balance board it is really hard to grasp what good balance feels like. They aren't very expensive and the results realized using one will pay over and over. What this training aid does is put your body in a position that if you get the slightest bit unstable it really exaggerrates it. It forces a golfer to have good golf swing mechanics and maintain balance during the swing.
One major swing flaw common among many amateurs is coming over the top. If you have this problem pay attention to where your weight goes during the swing, you will find it moves over the toes. By staying balanced the weight won't go over the toes making it virtually impossible to come over the top.
Once you learn proper golf swing mechanics of balance you will find yourself hitting straighter crisper shots.
