GOLF TIP LEARN TO HIT SHORT PITCH SHOTS
This golf tip is for one of the most difficult shots in golf, the 20 to 50 yard pitch shot. Pro's make this shot look easy but most amateurs have a difficult time executing a short pitch shot. This is because most fail to turn their lower body through the shot.
Here's the scenario; you left yourself 30 yards short of the pin, off the green. You want to take an 8 iron and hit some sort of pitch and run, but you can't there's a big deep bunker between you and the pin, your only chance is to hit a high lofted soft shot. Your deathly afraid, because you either tend to hit a big chunk, or blade this type of shot over the green. How do you execute the shot?
Let's start with the problem; most amateurs tend to use all hands and arms with very little body movement of their lower body through the shot. Notice, I said through the shot, if you watch amateurs hit short pitches there tends to be a lot of movement with the lower body during the backswing, but their lower body fails to turn back through during the shot.
Try this drill, it's a great golf tip and will teach you good execution of the pitch shot. Choose your most lofted wedge, 60 degree preferably; slightly open the face of the club along with an open stance. Play the ball back in your stance and place slightly more weight on your front foot, about 60-40. Now start your back swing with your arms and shoulders only, restricting your hip turn as much as possible, it should feel as if your hips are not turning at all. ( They will turn a little, because it's virtually impossible to turn your upper body and not have some hip turn.) Take your arms to the 9 o'clock and the club to the 11 o'clock position and stop. From here I want you to simply turn your hips toward the target. Do not throw your hands or club toward the ball; let the movement of your hips bring the club to the ball. Not only will this shallow out the swing path but watch how easily the ball pops up in the air.
Practicing this drill allows you to feel the hips turning through the shot. You may not get the hang of this golf tip at first, but once you do, you will be amazed how easy the shot is to execute. Note: Next time you watch a good player hit a short pitch shot, notice how little movement they have in the hips and legs during the backswing. This puts them in a better position to turn the hips through the shot during the swing.
