So You've Been Looking For A Golf Job And Want To Become a PGA Tour Caddy

You really like golf and wonder what it's like behind the ropes on the PGA tour. Many fans often ask; How do you get a job as a caddy on tour? This has been the number one question I am asked on tour.

This guide is designed to give fans around the world a glimpse inside life on tour. I will pass along the knowledge I have gained from my experience being a caddy. For fans that are interested in exploring a career path as a tour caddy this guide will help you decide if this golf job opportunity is something you would want to pursue. For others there is a lot of interesting insight into the world of golf on the Pga tour. A behind the scenes look at what really goes on.

The events surrounding a career on tour are fun, exciting, and can be very lucrative. You get to travel to exotic locations through out the world and have opportunities to do things you would never have been able to do. I have done things such as:

1. Ride in a simulated Nascar race around Texas Motor Speedway.

2. Fly on private jets.

3. Take batting practice in a major league ball park.

4. Played on one of the most beautiful top ranked golf courses in the world, Cypress Point.

5. Got paid to stay in a 5 star resort and play golf.

6. Spend two weeks in Hawaii and get paid.

These are just a few of the benefits I have experienced.

NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES!!!

Everything is not all fun and games. There are other things you need to consider before you entertain a career path as a tour caddy.

DO YOU REALLY LOVE THE GAME?

Remember you are going to spend countless hours at the golf course. Granted these will be some of the worlds greatest golf courses with some of the most spectacular scenery you will ever see. But if you don't have a deep passion for the game of golf this could become old very fast.

TRAVEL

You will need to go where your player goes. You will get to travel to extraordinary locations such as Hawaii, Palm Springs, Florida, Hilton Head, and others. On the other hand you will travel to other cities that may not be as glamorous. Although all cities have their own interesting qualities some don't have as much to offer as others.

WORK

Oh yeah; Did I forget to mention work? yes you will need to work. Most caddies will work an average of 30 weeks a year. This will depend on your player and how often he plays. Only working 30 weeks a year can have it's draw backs, some people get bored having 22 weeks off a year. I don't mind, this gives me plenty of time to play golf.

HOPE YOU LIKE WARM WEATHER

Its time to trade in your gloves, caps, and ski jackets for shorts, swim suits, and flip flops. The golf season begins the first of January for two weeks in Hawaii then off to Palm Springs, Phoenix, and San Diego. You will follow the sun all year. Yes from time to time you will run into a week with some chilly weather. But if snow and cold weather are what you like this golf career may not be for you.

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING A TOUR CADDY?

This depends on who you ask, each caddy has his opinion, but for me there is not a better golf job in the world. The 8 to 5 grind, rush hour traffic, and the day to day corporate hassles have never been for me. I get to spend my days on the golf course, in warm weather, at some of the most spectacular destinations in the world. If you have ever been to a Pga golf tournament you know the excitement and party atmosphere that surround these events. Each week its like you are off to a new party, and you get paid. Carrying the bag has it's ups and downs, during practice rounds and the pro am the bag can feel heavy and the day seems to last forever, but during the tournament the bags light and the rounds go by quickly.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN YOU EXPECT TO MAKE WITH A GOLF JOB AS A PGA TOUR CADDY?

Assume you worked 30 weeks and your player played just terrible you should make about $50,000 dollars. If you player finished in the top 150 to 125 this could range around $65,000 to $80,000 dollars. From 125 to 100 earnings would range around $80,000 to $125,000 dollars. These figures are just approximations and depend on how much money the player will make at that position. This year the player who finishes 100th on the money list will probably make about $1,000,000 dollars. After this the money just keeps going up and up. With the tour purses getting higher and higher so is the amount of money the caddies make.

ARE THERE OTHER GOLF JOB OPPORTUNITIES AS A CADDY OTHER THEN THE PGA TOUR?

Most certainly, you have the European Tour , LPGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, Challenge Tour, and the Senior Tour. There are plenty of opportunities to caddy in professional golf. If you really want to travel the world you may want to consider the European Tour. The European Tour plays in Europe, Africa, and Asia. This is a great opportunity to see the world.

HOW DO YOU LEARN TO BE A TOUR CADDY?

You learn all the things a caddy needs to do. You give yardages, know the course, wind direction, where to hit the ball, and where not to miss shots. Country club caddies around the world do the very same thing a Pga golf tour caddy does every day. The only difference is a tour caddy has a golf job on tour, and the country club caddy's golf job is at a country club. In fact there are probably a lot of country club caddies that are better at their jobs than tour caddies, but they just don't know how to get a job on tour.
